Rising Nipah Virus Concerns: What to Know About This Deadly Infection

Dr. Danish Ali on how Nipah virus is a serious infectious disease that can cause severe illness, including inflammation of the brain and respiratory complications. Although outbreaks are relatively uncommon, the virus has raised public health concerns because of its high potential for severe disease and its ability to spread from animals to humans and, in some circumstances, between people.

Early symptoms may include fever, headache, vomiting, cough, and difficulty breathing. As the infection progresses, some patients can develop confusion, seizures, or encephalitis, which can become life-threatening.

There is currently no widely approved specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for Nipah virus, making prevention, early detection, infection-control measures, and public health monitoring especially important.
